Start your registry

Many parents keep a registry at two or three stores, or use one universal list. Creating a registry is free at each of these.

Some of these are affiliate links, and we may earn a commission when you create a registry or shop. Perks belong to each store, can change, and have their own terms. How we earn.

If you're expecting, you've probably narrowed your registry choice to two names: Babylist and Amazon Baby Registry. Both are free, both are popular and both come with perks. But they work differently, and the right choice depends on how you and your gift-givers like to shop.

Below is a plain-English comparison of the features that matter most. Every number comes from each company's own help pages as of October 31, 2026. These policies change, so double-check anything important before you rely on it.

The Quick Answer

  • Choose Babylist if you want one list that pulls items from many stores, plus cash funds and favors.
  • Choose Amazon if you and most of your guests already shop on Amazon and you want simple checkout and easy returns.
  • Use both if you want Amazon's convenience and Babylist's flexibility. Babylist can hold Amazon items along with everything else.

Babylist: The Universal Registry

How it works

Babylist lets you add items from almost any store, including Amazon, Target, small shops and even a friend's hand-me-down list. Guests see one list and buy each item from wherever it's sold. You can also add cash funds for things like a diaper fund, childcare or a "stroller fund."

Sign up for Babylist.

Completion discount

Per Babylist's help center, you can get 15% off eligible items bought from the Babylist Shop once your registry has been open for 30 days. It applies from 60 days before to 90 days after your arrival date. The discount covers up to $4,000 in purchases, and you can use it more than once within that cap. A few things to know:

  • Collaborators can't use it; only the registry owner can.
  • Some brands are excluded.

Hello Baby Box

Babylist's free welcome box, the Hello Baby Box, has a few requirements:

  • a US shipping address
  • an arrival date less than nine months away
  • at least 3 items from other stores on the registry
  • at least 40% of Babylist's checklist complete
  • $30 or more in Babylist Shop purchases

You pay shipping ($8.95, or $18.95 to Alaska and Hawaii, at the time of writing), and that fee isn't refundable. Contents vary.

Best for

  • Families with guests who like to shop at different stores
  • Parents who want cash funds alongside physical gifts
  • Anyone who likes small brands or specific products not sold on Amazon

Amazon Baby Registry: Simple and Familiar

How it works

Amazon's registry works like a wish list built for baby. Guests buy straight from Amazon, often with fast shipping. As of 2023, you can no longer add items from other websites, so everything on the list must be sold on Amazon.

Start an Amazon Baby Registry.

Completion discount

Amazon offers a 15% completion discount on eligible items. Several third-party sources report 10% for non-Prime members, so check your own account. Per Amazon's terms:

  • It runs from 60 days before to 90 days after your arrival date.
  • It's limited to the primary registrant.
  • It covers up to $2,000 in purchases.
  • It can be used once every eight months.

Welcome Box

Amazon's Welcome Box needs a Prime membership and a registry with at least 10 unique items. It also requires a minimum amount of registry purchases and a shipping address in the contiguous US. Requirements have changed over time, so check the current terms.

Returns

Amazon offers 365-day returns on most items bought from your registry. That's helpful if you get duplicates or change your mind about a product.

Best for

  • Families who already shop on Amazon for most things
  • Guests who want a fast, familiar checkout
  • Parents who value easy returns

Things to Consider Before You Decide

Where your guests like to shop

Think about who's buying. Grandparents who've used Amazon for years may find it easiest. A friend who loves small shops might prefer Babylist's flexibility.

How much your list depends on one store

If you've already chosen a stroller or car seat that's cheapest at a particular retailer, a universal registry makes that easy. If almost everything you want is on Amazon anyway, the single-store simplicity is a plus.

How much the discount is actually worth

Do the math. If you plan to buy a lot yourself after the shower, compare the discount caps: up to $4,000 in purchases on Babylist versus $2,000 on Amazon. Then check which of your remaining items are actually eligible.

Whether you'll use both

Many parents keep a Babylist registry that includes Amazon items. Others keep an Amazon registry plus a short list elsewhere. Just make sure guests know where to look.

Keep Track of Everything (Whichever You Choose)

Whichever registry you pick, gifts will arrive from several directions: the shower, the mail, relatives. The Registry & Hospital Bag Checklist Bundle from our shop, CradlePaperCo, includes a registry planner page. It has spots to write your discount start and end dates and whether you've claimed your welcome box. There's also a gift and thank-you tracker.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add Amazon items to Babylist?

Yes. Babylist is a universal registry, so you can add items from Amazon and most other stores. Guests buy them on Amazon, and you mark them as purchased (or they're marked automatically, depending on the store).

Can I add items from other stores to an Amazon registry?

Not anymore. Amazon removed the option to add items from outside websites in 2023.

Which registry has the bigger completion discount?

Both advertise 15% on eligible items, but the caps differ. Babylist covers up to $4,000 in purchases and can be used multiple times. Amazon covers up to $2,000 and can be used once every eight months. Babylist's discount only applies to items bought from the Babylist Shop.

Are the welcome boxes really free?

Amazon's Welcome Box is free for eligible Prime members who meet the requirements. Babylist's Hello Baby Box is free, but you pay a shipping fee. Both have requirements, and both can change.

Can I have both registries?

Yes, and many people do. Link one from the other, or share both links clearly, to avoid duplicate gifts.

Registry features, discounts and requirements change often. We last checked them on October 31, 2026, using each company's help pages. Please confirm current details on Babylist and Amazon before relying on them.
